The Greene County High School Girls Golf Team wrapped up its 2019 golf season at the regional tournament held at Carroll Country Club. With just five players available, the team struggled to card four solid scores and finished in 12th position with a team total of 519 strokes for the 18-hole tourney.
Scoring for GCHS were:
Senior Mariah Block (60+48=108), whose back nine score of 48 was a season best and personal best; junior Ellie Madson (56+55=111); freshman Alex Miller (57+63=120), whose front nine score of 57 tied her season best/personal best; and sophomore, Faith Hankel (97+83=180). Also playing was sophomore Autumn Villebro (99-106=205)
Not playing were freshman Trista Gierstorf who has been battling an ankle injury all season and sophomore Bailey Brown.
“We set out at the beginning of the season to have fun, to learn skills and improve, and to represent our school with class. I believe from that regard, the season has been a success,” said coach Shawn Zanders. “Obviously, it’s more fun to win matches and tournaments, but each of our players showed improvement at different times and in different ways throughout the season.
“I was always proud to put this group on the course as representatives of our school and our communities – they are excellent people and they understand the integrity that comes with the great game of golf,” continued Zanders. “I will be sorry to see our time together end this season.
“I want to specifically compliment and thank Mariah, whose eligibility has expired. She is a fine young lady and an excellent role model for the younger players. I enjoyed getting to work with her this year. We wish her the very best as she begins a new chapter in her life as a young adult!
“I also want to thank volunteer coach Todd Madson, who volunteered a great deal of time to help the girls improve and to provide them with ideas and support for getting better. He has been a great asset to our team.
“Lastly, I want to challenge the returning players to keep building their skills. While I will tell them this in person, they also need to hear this from other members of the community – Just as any other skill-based activity, golf requires practice and an interest in learning more about the game,” added Zanders.
“For the Rams to move forward, as a team, each member must move forward as an individual in their own abilities and knowledge.
“ And, while we’re at it, we need more numbers. We need more players willing to give golf a try and willing to push each other to get better. We can still have fun and we can demonstrate great sportsmanship – AND we can also win more meets…that’s fun, too! 🙂
“MANY THANKS to ALL of our players, who worked hard this year!” continued Zanders. “To our parents who supported them with equipment and other resources! To The Hill and Jefferson GC members, management, and grounds crew!
“To Misty Betty and Mr. Christensen for the support behind the scenes! To the transportation department for the many schedules and changes they had thrown at them!” concluded Zanders. “To our local media outlets for the terrific support and coverage!”
Have a great summer – play some golf!
